WDSU: Brother Martin Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Teacher

The Brother Martin community is mourning the loss of a longtime educator.

Chris Caboni was described as a selfless servant who helped so many people.

"Chris was a model of what makes Brother Martin the place that it is," said Principal Ryan Gallagher '00.

Caboni spent 20 years in the science department at Brother Martin High School. Students and staff said he was calm, patient, and always helping others.

"He would take that time from setting up for classes labs, because that's what he did, and he would take that time, set it aside, and help me with a problem. Even if he didn't have the time, he would make the time," said Chandler Bonvillian '21.

On Friday, Caboni went to Florida to help prepare for Hurricane Dorian. Gallagher said when Caboni lost control of his vehicle when he was driving back and crashed. The Louisiana State Police called Gallagher about the crash. He then broke the news to the Brother Martin community.

"It's really unbelievable. It's one of your worst nightmares to answer that kind of phone call. Members of the science department loved him like a uncle, like a dad, like a brother. And they're really struggling. We're all really struggling," Gallagher said.
