English Students Challenged with Sentence Madness

In the 9th-grade English classes, Mr. Haro and Mr. Sims, looking for an alternative and fun way to teach grammar and sentence writing, brainstormed ideas for some kind of competitive atmosphere that would challenge their students to work collaboratively and creatively with each other while also learning a little bit along the way. The product of their brainstorming was a 32-team bracket that pitted 16 teams from Mr. Haro's four 9th grade sections against 16 teams from Mr. Sims' four 9th grade sections.

In each round of the tournament, teams were given a time limit to create certain types of sentences given certain English grammar parameters. The best sentences won, and the composing team advanced. In the end, the best team from Mr. Haro's classes faced off against the best team from Mr. Sims' classes. The 2019 Sentence Madness Champions came from Mr. Haro's 5th-period class. Congratulations to the Fire-Breathing Rubber Duckies on their sentence mastery this year!
