Wrestling Grinds Out a Win

holycross2Holy Cross scored a victory first as they recorded an 11-1 major decision win in the 103 lb. match. The Crusaders responded with a 6 match win streak to take a 16-4 lead. Brother Martin’s Steven Shields (113 lb.) scored a takedown as time expired to record an 11-3 major decision and tie things up at 4-4. Stephen Rumney defeated his opponent to give the Crusaders a 7-4 lead.  Taylor Gambill (126 lb.) scored on a reversal as time expired in the third period to tie the match and recorded the 4-2 overtime decision.

In the 132 lb. match, three-time state champion Paul Klein pinned his opponent in the first period propelling Brother Martin’s lead to 16-4.

Holy Cross and Brother Martin traded wins in the middle divisions as the Tigers won the 138 lb. but were defeated in the 145 lb. match.  Danny Evans increased the lead to 22-10 after a 9-3 decision over his opponent in the 160 lb. match before Holy Cross recorded a last-minute major decision victory at 170.

Brother Martin would get two pins and a victory in its next three matches from Yehia Riles, Travis Veirner, and Jacob Clapp for a 37-14 lead. In the final match, the Holy Cross heavyweight pinned Matt Montalbano with 1:21 remaining in the third period for the final score of 37-20.
