Wrestling Gets Ready for State

IMG_7934After much anticipation, the Brother Martin vs. Holy Cross dual meet finally took place on Monday night in the Conlin Gym.

In front of a packed student section and crowd, the Crusaders handled Holy Cross 40-13 in the final dual meet of the season.  Brother Martin won 10-of-14 matches but many individual duals were close battles on the mat.  Highlights of the evening include a triple overtime match, a Ken Cole rematch, and a race against the clock.  In a match between returning state champion Mason Mauro and freshman Joseph Foret of Holy Cross at 113 pounds, Mauro won the bout by riding out his opponent in the fourth overtime period.

Paul Klein avenged his only loss of the year by defeating George Benoit of Holy Cross, who he lost to in the finals at the Ken Cole Invitational.  Klein won 3-2 in the 132 pound match.

Josh Tapia got the Crusader fans on their feet after scoring a takedown with just 5 seconds left to defeat Daniel Relayson of Holy Cross at 220 pounds.

Scoring pins for the Crusaders were Taylor Gambill (126) and Mason Williams (160).

The Crusaders’ split squad will face De La Salle on Wednesday then begin preparations for the state tournament on February 21-22 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner as they look to three-peat as State Champs.
