The Crusader wrestling team traveled to Bossier City this past weekend to compete in the 2017 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships. The Crusaders went into the championships with high marks and took home the third place trophy. They finished the tournament with a respectable 277 points and finished just behind Catholic league rivals Jesuit (298.5) and Holy Cross (305). Daniel Varnado (106), Daniel Croy (113) and Steven Shields (132) took home individual state titles for the Crusaders. Steven Shields captured his fourth individual state title cementing his legacy as one of only two people in LHSAA Division I history to accomplish this feat. Former Crusader Paul Klein is the other. In addition, Luke Cotton (120) and Patrick Evans (145) finished as finalists. Lane Boudreaux (126) and Mack Brown (220) took home third place. Noah Roux (152) and Paul Elmer (160) finished in fifth place and Ben Wisniewski (138) and John Stemke (170) finished in sixth place. The future of Crusader wrestling looks very bright as the team will return eight wrestlers who placed in the state tournament this year.
