All students at Brother Martin, grades 7 through 12, have started this year’s Great Read: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. The book tells the amazing story of a young boy in Malawi, Africa, who teaches himself basic electrical circuitry and physics to build a windmill to generate power for his struggling agricultural community. Students will be reading the book and completing activities in a variety of classes. For example, 7th grade math teacher Mr. Ryan Skyta used the Malawi currency, the kwacha, in conversion exercises with his students so that they could better understand the real cost, in US dollars, of fundamental provisions in this underdeveloped nation.
