Today Brother Martin celebrated our annual Mass for Social Justice. The social justice focus acknowledges the Brothers of the Sacred Heart charism which encourages students to become men of compassion, justice, and service. The Mass was celebrated by Father Donald Hawkins, the pastor of Holy Name of Jesus parish, who was educated by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at McGill Institute in Mobile. Fr. Hawkins spoke fondly of his time spent with the Brothers and gave an inspiring homily on exorcising the social “demons” in our culture.
After the Mass, the Campus Ministry Office presented the Br. Collin Dugas Social Justice Award to seniors Ben Brinson, Robert Frank, and T.J. Nash. The Assistant Principal for Attendance and Discipline, Mr. Justin Fleetwood and College Counselor, Mrs. Laurie Leftwich received the award as faculty members. The annual award is given to those who are known for promoting social justice by working for equality for all, especially the most poor and vulnerable among us and having compassion for all of those in our school and local community.
Following the award, former students and present parishioners of Holy Name of Jesus Parish had their picture taken with their pastor.
