Student Formation: The Impact of Brother Martin’s Test Prep Course on Students

Brother Martin tracks student performance data to establish and evaluate our goals for student success and college preparation. The 'high stakes test' for our students is typically the ACT, which is used by most colleges as part of their admissions criteria. All Juniors and Advanced Sophomores now take the ACT on campus in the spring semester as part of the testing program.

Over the years, our teachers have initiated a series of activities that complement our already rigorous college prep curriculum to make sure students are prepared for the test both in terms of its content as well as its format. At Brother Martin, Teachers focus on imparting the content material as well as familiarizing students with the formatting of ACT-type questions across various subjects. Examples of classroom activities having a powerful impact on student ACT performance include:

  • Intentional classroom instruction centered around common ACT challenges in content
  • Bi-annually scheduled practice testing
  • ACT-style assessment questions on regular classroom tests and exams
  • Use of informational texts
  • Weekly test preparation class for all students.

Over the last several years, Brother Martin has established that 100% of each senior class completes the ACT at least once. The chart below shows the impressive progress the last four graduating classes have made in both the subject tests and in the average Composite score. The Composite score is an ACT generated combination of all the scores on the various subtests. The 2018 average ACT Composite score for all students in the state of Louisiana is 19.2, while the 2018 national average for all students taking the ACT is 20.8. As you can see, our students consistently score significantly higher than these averages.

Congratulations students on your performance!

Congratulations Brother Martin faculty on building upon a solid curriculum and adding the resources necessary to empower our students to flourish!
