Saturday afternoon, the Jesuit Blue Jays hosted the Brother Martin Crusaders in the district opener at John Ryan Stadium. On a warm, windy afternoon, the Crusaders found themselves trailing early after a Jesuit player scored in the 11th minute on a free kick for a 1-0 lead.
In the 25th minute, the Crusaders evened up the score on a goal by Miles Francis who fought off two defenders sending the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-1.
Heading into the second half, the score remained tied at 1-1. The Crusader attack began to pressure the middle of the field in the second half which led to some scoring opportunities. A Crusader defender sent the ball downfield after a free kick for Marc Alvendia. After taking a high bounce over the Jesuit goalkeeper’s head, Alvendia put it in the goal for a 2-1 lead. The Crusaders would play lockdown defense for the remainder of the game to earn the 2-1 victory.
Brother Martin (12-0) will play Holy Cross on Wednesday at 3:30 on Farley Field. Go ‘Saders!
