Seniors Begin Their "Olympic Year"

IMG_1216The Class of 2017 along with their parents met on Monday evening to congratulate the new class and discuss important topics for all seniors.

Mr. Ryan Gallagher ‘00,  spoke to the seniors about their “Olympic Year.” He alluded to the life guards sitting around the Olympic pools with little to do– that’s the role that senior parents and teachers have this year– they are here for the seniors just in case. Mr. Gallagher acknowledged that the faculty and administration trust the seniors because they know what’s expected of them. He did caution the seniors about a few items:  1) frequent absences for college visits (Ms. Wild mentioned one date- October 18, 2016 -that seniors aren’t in class as possible times for college visits), 2) academic dishonesty and the severe consequences of making that choice, and 3) making good choices when attending parties and when posting on social media.

The new Assistant Principal for Academics, Mrs. Deborah Broussard, spoke to the seniors about rethinking the idea that senior year is a “breeze” by reminding them of some of the more difficult subjects that they will be taking– physics, advanced math, calculus, economics, Spanish IV to name a few. She challenged them to work to  achieve their own “Academic Excellence” to celebrate their accomplishments.

Next, Ms. Wild, the College Placement Counselor, spoke about the uncertainty of TOPS and offered parents some advice about TOPS for next year. She announced a new date for the FAFSA application; seniors can now start the application on October 1, 2016. This is a new, earlier date, so students should take advantage of getting this application done sooner. She encouraged all seniors to complete their applications to Louisiana public colleges and universities by Labor Day. These schools’ applications are relatively easy and quick to complete.

The meeting ended with seniors picking up their Diploma Name Confirmation form, a picture envelope from Romaguera for Ring Mass, permission slips for the optional day of service, and a Prom Favor order form. They also received a current Transcript at the meeting. All forms and information are on the Brother Martin website in the “Quick Links, Senior Section.” Many of these forms are due next week.
