Scholastic Crusaders: Student Writers Recognized with Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Congratulations to Bret Johnston '20 and Blair Anderson '19 for earning recognition in the Southeast Regional round of the Scholastic Writing Awards, a national creative writing & art competition. These two Crusader authors submitted stories that successfully earned regional awards in three different categories: memoir, short story, and flash fiction. Bret Johnston's story titled "A Mask of Emotions" received the Gold Key regional award and will now advance to compete for a National Medal to be announced on March 12, 2019. National Medal winners receive recognition at a special ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 6, 2019.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12, receiving over 350,000 submissions in writing and artwork annually, of whom less than 2,800 compete at the national level. Since 1923, the Awards have recognized some of America’s most celebrated writers while they were teenagers, including Sylvia Plath, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, and Truman Capote.

Congratulations to these two Crusader writers on recognition for their talent and hard work!
