The Brother Martin Sailing Team set sail off the shores of Lake Pontchartrain in the Spring Series Regatta in mid-March. The Regatta occurs on Fridays throughout the spring and consists of several high schools in the Greater New Orleans area. During these regattas, otherwise known as sailing races, each school is allowed several boats; each boat consists of a Skipper and a Crew member.
On this particular evening of races, Brother Martin got the sails up and placed second or third. This regatta was definitely a step in the right direction, as several new sailors learned the basics of racing during their first competition experience. Many of our seasoned sailors began to hone in on their sailing abilities, especially on their starts. With the help of our Coach Neil Gahagan ’13, our efforts to become the best sailing team in New Orleans are quickly approaching the horizon.
The sailing team will participate in the last regattas of this school year. The regattas will take place this Friday, April 20 from 4:30 – 6 p.m. and again on Saturday, April 21. Saturday’s regatta, sponsored by NOYC, will include schools from Mississippi, Florida and New Orleans. The regattas occur on Lake Pontchartrain near Southern Yacht Club. On Saturday, the competition will begin around 10:30 am and will continue throughout the day (always weather permitting!) If you have a chance, come and watch us!
