The Crusader Rugby team traveled to Niceville, Florida on Saturday to play the Niceville RFC. Brother Martin held on to win 27 -20. The Crusaders scored first on an interception by Quinn Condon who raced down the sideline for the try. Next the Crusader forward pack scored on a succession of pick and drives to go up 10-0. Brother Martin let Niceville back into the game allowing a blocked kick which Niceville scooped up for the try bringing the score to 10-5. Brother Martin’s next score was off of a penalty play to increase the lead to 15-5 and was pressuring the Niceville line at the final whistle for half.
The Crusaders opened the second half with a beautifully executed cut play and Bruce Cuccia dove over the last defender to bring the score to 20-5. Brother Martin then had some defensive lapses on the outside allowing a speedy Niceville winger to score twice. bringing the score to 20-15. Will Hamblin sealed the victory for Br Martin charging over for a try on a penalty play. The conversion was made and the score was 27-15. Br Martin gave up one more try on sloppy tackling on a Niceville penalty and the game ended a few minutes later with Br Martin holing on to a 27-20 win.
In the B game Lester Duhe, Todd Mathieu, and James Shea all scored tries to lead Br Martin to 19-12 win.
Next up for the Brother Martin Rugby team is Jesuit on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the City Park Rugby Field at the corner of Harrison and Marconi.
