Reflecting on the Legacy of Brother Martin Hernandez

Celebrating Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C.

Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C. our namesake, passed away thirty-two years ago today. This morning, our Principal, Mr. Ryan Gallagher '00, reflected on Brother Martin's legacy:

"It is important that we reflect upon and celebrate the many men and women - both religious and lay partners in mission - who have helped pave the way for each of us to be here at Brother Martin High School today. Four years ago, the sculpture of Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C. was unveiled as our school community paid homage to this most important man. This sculpture, made possible by the incredible generosity of those whose hearts were touched by Brother Martin Hernandez in and around these very hallways and classrooms many years ago, stands as a testament to his lasting legacy. His sculpture stands in the back courtyard, overlooking his school. We walk this campus under the watchful eye of Brother Martin Hernandez every day.

The man whose name our school is memorialized by is a legend. He dedicated his life to evangelizing young people through education for 72 years. He joined the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at the young age of 15 years old - younger than many of you students. What incredible vision by an incredible man."

His Legacy Lives On

The spirit of Brother Martin's legacy lives on today in the students, faculty and staff, and in every member of the Brother Martin family. Students of that legacy whose birthdays are in August were honored with a blessing and prayer card this morning after Mass in the James B. Branton Chapel (under the guidance of newly appointed Director of Campus Ministry, Donald Midkiff '03).

Prayer on This Anniversary

Prayer for Thursday, August 24, 2023
(Anniversary of the Death of Bro. Martin Hernandez, S.C.)

Good morning, may I please have your attention for our morning prayer...

Let us call to mind that we are in the Holy Presence of God as we pray,

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

Dear Heavenly Father,

We are forever grateful for the gift of Brother Martin Hernandez, and his impact on our lives. His life was one filled with service for others. His life was one of humility. His life was one of Love. Lord, grant us the strength to emulate Brother Martins's life by our words and actions.

May his humility be a beacon of light in a world often shrouded in darkness.

Let his example inspire us all to put others before ourselves, to listen more than we speak, and to find joy in acts of kindness, no matter how small.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, proof of the Father's love and desire for me, I place all my trust in you. Amen.

Ametur Cor Jesu, Ametur Cor Mariae

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
