Prayer for Brother Mark Hilton as the Newly-Elected Superior General

DSC08160Earlier this week at the General Chapter meeting of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Rome, Brother Mark Hilton, the Provincial of the United States Province, was elected the Brothers’ new Superior General. The Superior General is the canonical leader of all of the Brothers in the Institute worldwide and is selected by an international slate of delegates every six years.

Brother Mark’s new residence will be at the General House in Rome where he will work with an international council of assistants providing pastoral animation for the over 1,000 Brothers stationed in 32 countries. Upon election, Brother Mark took office immediately. The 1st Councilor of the local provincial council, Brother Ronald Hingle, will serve as interim Provincial until a special Province Chapter of Elections for the United States can be scheduled.

This morning, we paused before we started our day to congratulate and pray for Brother Mark as he begins this new journey in his vocation:

A few years ago, when Brother Mark was the President of Bishop Guertin High School in New Hampshire, he spoke of why he remains a Brother.  He said, “A key reason remains the deep connection and value of community life. Today community continues to be one of those crucial elements that nurtures my life of prayer and supports my apostolic life.  No matter what I do, as teacher, administrator, or Brother, I am part of a much larger whole, a worldwide community of Brothers, called to that same mission, and that makes all the difference.”

Let us call to mind that we are in God’s presence.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Lord,

In 1841, Brother Polycarp was voted unanimously as Superior General – the first  Brother of the Sacred Heart Superior General, and the congregation flourished tremendously under his leadership.  We pray for Brother Mark as he fills the same position as Brother Polycarp did 177 years ago. May the Brothers and their ministries flourish under the leadership of Brother Mark as well. Just as Brother Mark found community to be a strong support in his vocation, may our community here at Brother Martin continue to flourish and nurture us.

We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Ametur Cor Jesu, Loved be the Heart of Jesus.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

From all of us here at Brother Martin High School, we would like to Congratulate Brother Mark on this incredible honor and newly-elected role as the Superior General for the Brothers!
