Physical Science Constructs Rube Goldberg Projects

DSC06602Mr. Franks’ ninth-grade Physical Science classes are getting creative and constructing “Rube Goldberg” projects. The project is named after Reuben Garrett Lucius “Rube” Goldberg (July 4, 1883 – December 7, 1970) who was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor. He is best known for a series of popular cartoons depicting complicated gadgets.

The object of the Physical Science group projects is to accomplish a simple task by using a series of complicated steps. Students had to include at least four steps and use at least three of the six simple machines which consisted of pulleys, levers, screw, wheel and axle, inclined plane, and a wedge.

Crusaders had about two weeks to come up with an idea and successfully accomplish the Rube Goldberg ‘task.’
