Alumni, families, and friends of Brother Martin gathered at Tipitina’s on Thursday night for the 1st Annual “Marty Gras” benefit concert in honor of legendary drummer and band director Mr. Marty Hurley. The evening kicked off with a special performance by the Crusader Drumline on the Napoleon Avenue playing some of Mr. Hurley’s legendary cadences. Stanton Moore ’90 and other alumni drummers strapped on a drum to closed out the performance before sending the crowd indoors to hear the Brother Martin Stage Band. A silent auction was held near the upstairs VIP area featuring some Marty Hurley memorabilia donated by Paulette Purser Hurley and a Gretsch Snare Drum donated and autographed by Stanton Moore.
Local artists including the Wayne Maureau ’87 Trio, the Bucktown Allstars (Steve Alfonso ’89, David Connick ’88, Michael Hotstream ’90), Clarence Johnson ’82 and Friends, Members of Flow Tribe (K.C. O’Rorke ’04, Russell Olschner ’04, Mario Palmisano ’04, and Bryan Santos ’04), and Stanton Moore ’90 & Friends kept the crowd rocking as they danced the night away. Thanks to everyone in attendance, and a special thanks goes out to the main sponsor Dave’s Pharmacy (Anna & David Jouandot ’78) along with Johnny Blue ‘86 & Kleo Blue ‘89 of Faux Pas Prints, Ralph Romaguera Sr., and Pigeon’s Catering.
