Tipitina’s hosted our Marty Gras event on Thursday, June 2nd. The concert to benefit the Marty Hurley Endowment at Brother Martin featured Stanton Moore ’90, Bag of Donuts, Bucktown All-Stars, Peabody, and the Brother Martin Stage Band and Drumline. Special guests included Arthur Hardy, Keith Spera '85 and Mark Romig '74. 2022 Alumnus of the Year Kraig de Lanzac ’86 surprised Mr. Hardy with the announcement of the establishment Arthur Hardy Fine Arts Scholarship at Brother Martin High School. Over 250 guests enjoyed the evening which included VIP tickets with upstairs balcony viewing, drink tickets, and catering from Katie’s & Francesca’s.
In anticipation of our 2022 Marty Gras event, the second Marty Hurley Clinic occurred on Saturday, May 28th, from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM in the Brother Martin Band Room. It was presented by Dr. John Wooton, Professor of Percussion at the University of Southern Mississippi, and Mark Elsensohn '13 to a group of about 13 students from all over the metropolitan New Orleans area. Directors were asked to submit up to 2 names of deserving students to attend this worthwhile clinic.
Students were taught rigorous percussion warmups, encouraged to improvise within rudimental drumming rules, and were given instruction on basic drum rudiments, all the while being shown to expand that knowledge to drum set and improvisation.
The students also received information on the life of Marty Hurley along with humorous stories of inspiration related to him!
