On Tuesday October 30th students in Mr. Dossaji’s Marine Biology/Environmental Science class were visited by Sophomore and Junior Biology cell and molecular Biology students from Tulane University. These students under the guidance of their professor, Dr. Meenakshi Vijayaraghavan had been conducting water quality tests at given sites at the lagoon in Audubon Park. The Tulane students demonstrated the procedure and results for dissolved oxygen content, pH levels, water turbidity and temperature and their effects on the various animal and plant life that inhabits Audubon park.
Brother Martin students were able to see how the scientific method was applied and learnt with a hands on approach how to conduct these various tests for water quality. At the end of the presentation the floor was opened for questions. All in all it was an enjoyable learning experience for the students in Mr. Dossaji’s class and exposed them to applications of science learnt in the classroom and how they can be translated to a place like Audubon Park.
