“Let’s Talk Books!”: Brother Martin Summer Reading 2020

To teach a love of reading and life long learning, Brother Martin's Summer Reading Program emphasizes student choice and small group book discussions. Faculty members each chose a favorite book, and students could choose from 65+ titles, ranging from science fiction, sports, and business, to detective fiction. Students read the book over the summer and then participated in a small group book discussion with the teacher whose book they chose. Students were able to express their feelings about the book--their surprises, their disappointments, their questions--in an informal way, modeled on the way that adults often come together to discuss common reading experiences. Thanks to Mrs. Keiren Aucoin, Librarian, and Mrs. Debbie Broussard, Academic Assistant Principal, for advertising the book choices and planning the logistics of the morning during which 900+ students were gathered in small groups talking books!
