In their World Geography and English classes, our 8th grade Crusaders completed an activity that brought together the reading of a graphic novel (Drowned City: Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans by Don Brown) and histories from members of the Brother Martin faculty and staff who experienced Katrina firsthand.
Connecting to their own Hurricane Ida evacuation experiences, these students were able to explore and compare the various ways people and communities respond to powerful storms and the short and long term effects, both physical and emotional, that these storms bring to our area. Culminating activities included creating "best practices" regarding preparing for and evacuating from storms as well as formal Q & A documentation of personal interviews.
Brother Martin encourages interdisciplinary connections between subject areas as well as finding ways to connect classroom content to students' lives.
