On the last day of October, metal worker John Perilloux and members of the Ryan Gootee General Contractors construction team hoisted into place a 16 foot iron cross outside the James B. Branton Chapel. The cross, simple in design and featuring at its center the Sacred Heart with rays of light emanating, is modeled on the mission crosses that the founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, Father Andre Coindre, placed in small French towns after he successfully preached multi day “missions” in the early 1800s. This replica obviously identifies our Catholic chapel while at the same time harkens to the rich past of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. While this cross may be permanently planted now on campus, our mission of forming young men in the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart continues.
