The Crusaders (18-13-1) advanced to the Division I baseball state quarterfinals after 2-0 best-of-three series victory over the Shaw Eagles this weekend. On Friday, the Crusaders won in ten innings by a score of 4-3 after Tré Morgan (12) scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Prior to that, there was plenty of excitement in the eighth inning as both teams loaded the bases, but were only able to score a single run apiece. Cole Stromboe (32) and Dominic Robert (3) each recorded an RBI for the Crusaders and pitchers Brandon Bonura (23) and Lance Malter (13) combined to strike out seven Shaw batters.
On Saturday, the Crusaders had a much easier time picking up the win by a score of 11-0. Already up 3-0 through three innings, the Crusaders used an explosion of offense in the fourth to score eight runs on five hits. With the bases loaded, Joel Bergeron (8) laced a triple that scored three runs and Zach Repath (2) followed with an RBI single. Joe Delaney (1) then ripped an RBI triple. The last three runs of the inning were scored on a wild pitch, error, and a passed ball. Freshman pitcher Jacob Cohen (4) was sensational as he limited the Shaw batters to two hits and no runs in four complete innings.
The Crusaders will continue their playoff run when they face the Holy Cross Tigers on Friday, May 5 at Holy Cross Park for 4 p.m. in another best-of-three series. First pitch on Saturday will be for 1 p.m., and 4 p.m., if necessary. Admission to each game is $8 for adults and $4 for students and children 11 and under.
