The 2018 Golden Crusader Luncheon was held at The Steak Knife in Lakeview on Friday, May 25, 2018, with over 95 Golden Crusaders and special guests in attendance. At this annual event, hosted by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association, Golden Crusaders came together in true Crusader spirit to celebrate tradition and to welcome the 2018 recipients of the Golden Crusader award. A Golden Crusader best exemplifies the spirit of Brother Martin High School and models that spirit in his behavior and in his beliefs. These men demonstrate strong Christian values, service to others, and consistent self-discipline with a firm commitment to academic excellence. Their contributions have made Brother Martin a better place.
The committee planning this event consisted of Philip Averill ’04, Brian Barkemeyer ’79, Mark Bologna ’88, Michael Calogero ’81, Philip Catanzaro ’97, Gary Giepert ’80, Adam Griego ’10, Scott Hedlund ’97, Paul Marcello ’12, Zachary Materne ’01, Alex Migliore ’14, Tommy Mitchell ’79, John Person ’73, Patrick Young ’07 along with Director of Development Kenny Spellman ’84 and Director of Alumni Scott Corrente ’83.
The ceremony began with an opening prayer led by Jerry Ursin ’07, and then Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 welcomed his fellow Golden Crusaders along with special guests President John Devlin, Executive Vice President Greg Rando ’77, Nick Lagattuta ’71, Bro. Neal Golden ’57 CJ, Bro. Dwight Kenney, S.C ‘71, along with former Brother Martin faculty members Justin Fleetwood, Guy Nelson, and Arthur Hardy. In addition, Mr. Gallagher introduced the 2018 Golden Crusaders: Tyler Epps, Jackson Vicknair, Joseph Aguda III, Michael Connick, Jeremy Baier, John Buchert, Benjamin Chanes, Jason Stant, Colby Coulon, Hayden Courregé, Damon Smith, and Tanner Olsen. (Cody Elsensohn was not present.)
Prior to lunch, Paul Marcello ’12 and Mr. Ursin presented to the attendees a brief testimonial about being a part of the Brother Martin community. Closing out the luncheon, Golden Crusader and 2008 Alumnus of the Year Brian Barkemeyer, M.D. ’79 thanked the guests and invited them to a social following the luncheon.
