Friday, December 21st, the Brother Martin winter sports programs were in action all over the state. Getting the action started was the varsity basketball team. The Crusaders were set to face off against the Rummel Raiders in the semi-finals of the Valero Tournament. The Rummel Raiders took their biggest lead of the game, 50-44, early in the fourth quarter. But the top-ranked Brother Martin Crusaders answered with a 23-5 run and went on to beat their District 9-5A rivals 71-61 to advance to the finals of the Valero/Chalmette High Christmas Classic. Brother Martin will play Chalmette in the finals on Saturday at 6:30.
The Brother Martin soccer team started play in the Showcase Tournament in Lake Charles yesterday against Caddo. The Crusaders battled a tough team and came out on top by a score of 1-0. Brother Martin will play Teurlings at 9:45 am Saturday.
In the first-day of the Trey Culotta, team standings are as follows: Brother Martin leads with 597, followed by Vestavia (466), Catholic-B.R. (465), Shawnee (452), Jesuit (433), St. Paul’s (333), East Ascension (280), St. Thomas (262), Fontainebleau (254), Houston (190), Mandeville (153), and Shaw (90). Ross Brister scored five wins in the 285-pound weight class on the first day of competition in the Brother Martin-Trey Culotta Invitational, the first four by pins. Competition continues at the Brother Martin Gymnasium at 8:30 a.m. with the finals scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
