On Saturday afternoon, the Brother Martin Crusaders (5-4, 3-2) defeated the Shaw Eagles by a score of 41-7 and extended their winning streak to four games. It was a great afternoon for the Brother Martin community as they celebrated Senior Day at the Shrine on Airline! Prior to the gram, a presentation was held honoring seniors and their parents.
The Crusader football defense set the tone by coming up with six turnovers including two interceptions returned for touchdowns. After a scoreless first quarter, Brendan Brown started the Crusader scoring with a 14 yard interception return for a touchdown. Next, it was Erick Lassair who returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown. After Shaw cut into the Crusader lead with a touchdown drive of their own, Davonn Moore responded with a 52 yard touchdown run that put the Crusaders up 21-7 heading into halftime.
On the first possession of the third quarter, the Crusader expanded their lead with Erick Lassair’s four yard touchdown run. The defense continued to shine as Matthew Alfonso picked off a Shaw pass and returned it to the four yard line. Alfonso would go on to score with a one yard touchdown run. With the game firmly in hand by the fourth quarter, the Crusaders elected to play most of their reserves, allowing the underclassmen to gain some valuable game time experience.
The Crusaders will close district play on Friday, November 3 against the Jesuit Blue Jays for 7 p.m. at Tad Gormley. Tickets can be purchased at the Bookstore for $6 for adults and $3 for children. The game will also have great events such as the Alumni Band Reunion, Junior High Band Night, and the Kiddy Cheer Clinic Performance.
