Two Education Specialists from The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation (LPBF), Joann Haydel and Anne Barrett, visited the Excalibur Science National Honor Society today and spoke to members about three important missions of the LPBF: Save Our Lake, Save Our Coast, and other volunteer projects.
Ms. Haydel explained how the LPBF was instrumental in returning Lake Pontchartrain to an ecologically safe environment by advocating for legislation against oil drilling in the lake and encouraging clean up efforts by volunteers. The second mission, to Save Our Coast, is an ongoing struggle to keep our barrier islands and other natural defenses in place against the effects of tidal erosion from hurricanes and salt water intrusion. Through tree planting and other volunteer efforts, the LPBF has been able to hold on to new sediment deposits and increase the amount of new land formations.
Students were also given information on how to become a volunteer and spokesman to protect our local natural resources.
