Early Goal Proves to be Enough

brother-martins-jonathan-labatut-3073a0d4fdf01d4aThe Crusaders had a shot at redemption and took it in Monday night’s 1-0 non-district win against Grace King at Tad Gormley.  The Fighting Irish defeated Brother Martin in last season’s state quarterfinal match in PKs to knock out the Crusaders.

An early goal by senior Austin Bourgeois in the 13th minute helped set the tone for the match.  Junior sweeper Miles Francis raced up the sideline and played a ball into the box that Bourgeois connected with and sent passed the Irish goalkeeper for the lead.

The Crusader defense controlled the first 30 minutes not allowing Grace King a single shot on goal, but the Irish created several chances in the final 10 minutes of the half.

Early in the second half, in the 45th minute, a Grace King forward got behind the Brother Martin back line and fired a shot that deflected off the post. With just 10 minutes left, the Irish sent a shot toward an empty net, but senior Daniel Spring stopped the shot and clear the ball to save the victory.

Brother Martin is in action on Wednesday, January 14th at 3:30 pm against Holy Cross on Farley Field.
