Crusaders Take District Opener

_CAB5936On a wet Saturday afternoon, the Crusaders (6-0) added to their win streak with a convincing 41-29 Catholic League victory against the Purple Knights at Tad Gormley Stadium.

St. Augustine got on the board first with a first quarter drive capped by Lanard Fournette’s four-yard touchdown run to lead 6-0.

Brother Martin (6-0, 1-0) took their first lead on a scoring drive by Jordan-Swilling’s two-yard run early in the second quarter.  The Crusaders would score two more times in the half, once on a Jeremy Singleton 16 yard TD pass from Jake Broggi and on a Jared West 22 yard run.

The Purple Knights would also find the endzone once more on a 9 yard TD pass to bring the first half to a close with the Crusaders leading 20-13.

Running backs Jared West and Bruce Jordan-Swilling played pivotal roles in a third-quarter surge with scoring runs of 56 and 47 yards that gave the Crusaders a 34-13 lead which Brother Martin would keep for the remainder of the game.

St. Augustine scored and converted a two-point conversion near the end of the third quarter and the fourth quarter, but a Jordan-Swilling 55 yard “pick-six” early in the fourth quarter helped pave the way for a Crusader victory and a 6-0 start.

The running back duo of West and Jordan-Swilling continued to dominate on the ground. West had 19 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns while Jordan-Swilling tallied 63 yards on eight attempts with two TD runs, and a 55 yard interception for a TD.

Junior quarterback Jake Broggi completed six of eight passes for 85 yards and a 16-yard scoring pass to sophomore wide receiver Jeremy Singleton.  Kicker Glynn Morere converted on five of six PAT attempts.
