The Crusader basketball team competed in the Division I state championship game (Marsh Madness) against the Scotlandville Hornets on Saturday in Lake Charles. Unfortunately, the Crusaders lost a nail- biter of a game 53 – 52. Trailing by six with about 50 seconds to go, Tré Swilling hit a clutch three pointer and then Pattre’en Hughes sank two free throws 18 seconds later to bring the Crusaders within one. After a turnover on a backcourt violation by the Hornets, Swilling was fouled and sank two free throws to give Brother Martin a 52 – 51 lead. However, Scotlandville answered on their next possession with two free throws of their own after Swilling was called for a questionable foul. With six seconds to go and down by one point, the Crusaders had a chance to win, but a last second shot by Jeremy Singleton fell just short.
Congratulations to the Crusaders on an exciting basketball season and a Catholic League championship.
“The players on the team and the basketball coaching staff would like to thank the thousands of students, faculty, staff, administration, family members, and alumni who supported us in the championship game in Lake Charles. The spirit of the Crusader Nation was truly felt by all in attendance and nearly carried our team to another state championship. Thank you!” Coach Chris Biehl
