Friday night, the Brother Martin basketball team traveled to Chalmette to take on the Owls. During the first quarter, the Crusaders used a half-court trap defense which resulted in nine Chalmette turnovers and a 20-5 first quarter lead. Brother Martin went to a full-court pressure defense in the second quarter. This defense caused the Owls had to produce with some perimeter shooting. Chalmette guards delivered hitting four 3-pointers in a row in the second quarter cutting the lead within eight. This hot shooting, 50 percent from the floor, had the Owls down 32-24 heading into the half.
But the second half was more in favor of the Crusaders. The entire Brother Martin starting five would each step up and contribute double-digit scoring efforts, and the Owls would ultimately crumble under the weight of their turnovers, committing 25 turnovers in the game.
Jalen Gray scored 22 points while Jordan Cornish added 15, Jabbar Singleton had 12 and Patrick McCree had 11.
The JV team also defeated the Owls 56-49 in OT.
District play continues tonight against West Jefferson at West Jefferson. JV tip-off is set for 5:30 with the varsity to follow.
