Crusaders Crush the Eagles in Playoff Opener

2014-11-14 21.08.57-1Brother Martin opened the Division I playoffs with a 63-21 victory against No. 12 Shaw on a chilly Friday night at Joe Yenni Stadium.

The Crusaders dominated the first half scoring 42 of its 63 points in the opening two quarters of play.

The Crusaders came out of the gate fast scoring on its first drive as they drove 37 yards in three plays finishing with a West 19-yard scoring TD.

On their next possession, Broggi found Kyler Johnston for an 8-yard touchdown reception.  Johnston made the catch that set up the game winning TD in the previous Brother Martin vs. Shaw game.

After a Matthew Clapp fumble recovery, Jordan-Swilling ran 11 yards for the score, and the Crusaders were up 21-0.

The Eagles responded with their only scoring drive of the half on a 3-yard TD pass.  But, Brother Martin answered right back when tight end Irv Smith caught a pass between two Eagles defenders and raced 69 yards for the score.

After a Jordan-Swilling interception, Broggi tossed his third touchdown pass when he hit Singleton on a 4-yard strike for a 35-7 lead early in the second quarter.  After Brother Martin forced a turnover on downs, West scored on a 19-yard run to set the 42-7 halftime score.

The Crusaders would score another 21 points in the second half to finish the game with a final score of 63-21.

The Crusaders finished with 592 yards of offense, and a new school record for total points.  The the old mark of 59 points was in a triple overtime game in 1989.

Broggi finished 16-for-22 passing for 247 yards and four scores (1 rushing TD). On the receiving end, Jeremy Singleton had eight receptions for 83 yards and a score.

Jared West rushed for 215 yards and two scores on 19 carries while Bruce Jordan-Swilling finished with 100 yards on 10 carries and two scores. Jordan-Swilling also caught a 35-yard touchdown pass.

The Brother Martin defense forced five 3 & outs, a fumble recovery, and interceptions by Jordan-Swilling and Tyler Rebert.

The fifth-seeded Crusaders (9-2) will travel to No. 4 seeded Catholic-Baton Rouge in the quarterfinals.  Kickoff is set for 7:00pm this Friday at Memorial Stadium, N 17th St, Baton Rouge, LA 70802.   Brother Martin will sit on the press box side of the stadium and park in the second lot.
