Recently, students in Mr. Thomas's '97 UNO dual enrollment Environmental Science class visited the Pontchartrain Conservancy's lab at the New Canal Lighthouse. Students learned how to safely collect water samples to be used in testing for salinity and the presence of microplastics and algae. On their own, students will collect water samples from various local sources and test them, providing the Pontchartrain Conservancy with important and relevant data as they continue their mission in promoting the health of our Lake Pontchartrain Basin. Thank you to Dr. Brady Skaggs, the Pontchartrain Conservancy's Water Quality Director, for initiating this collaboration, another example of Brother Martin's linking academic work to real life and promoting the Catholic social teaching of "Care for God's Creation."
