Last night, the #1 ranked Crusaders traveled to John Ryan Stadium to face the #2 ranked Jesuit Blue Jays. The Crusaders started the scoring quickly on a cold, breezy night with a goal in the 11th minute on a Peter Brooks’ header. Mark Mangum provided the cross as Brooks beat the Jesuit keeper. Mark Mangum almost scored a few minutes later but his shot grazed the post causing it to bounce away from the net.
In the second half, Pierce Rubenstein scored a goal in the top corner of the net after a long throw-in and a bad Jesuit clearance in the 60th minute. Five minutes later, Mangum scored after a ball was cleared to the streaking forward, who fought off a defender and beat the keeper giving the Crusaders a 3-0 lead.
Jesuit’s forward scored in stoppage time, which was the second goal Brother Martin allowed this season, to avoid the shutout.
The varsity soccer team’s next opponent will be Chalmette High. Kick-off is set for Saturday at 1:00 pm at Chalmette High.
