The varsity Cross Country team ended with a 2nd place finish at the All State Sugar Bowl Metro Cross Country Championships on November 8th on a beautiful Saturday morning. Hayden Courrege (3rd overall) and Chace Edwards (4th overall) ran a strategically flawless race, executing their plan to perfection from start to finish. Hayden and Chace tucked in to the lead chase pack early, waiting for the midway point to make a big surge. With about 500 meters remaining, Hayden and Chace had moved to the front of the pack and laid down a big surge that their tiring opponents could not match.
Felipe Pelaez (17th) and Mason Williams (30th) set the pace for the rest of our pack, and Ben Crowley (15th) and Myles Ceravolo (23rd) ran on their shoulders through the first 1.5 mile loop of the course. Crowley and Ceravolo hung tough in the Top 25 throughout the race, and Crowley used a big surge with just under one mile remaining to move inside the Top 20, while Ceravolo and Williams fought for points just behind Crowley. Freshman Marco Perez – in just his third 3 mile race – outworked his competition and methodically moved up through the field for the entirety of the race. With just over one mile remaining, Perez latched on to Williams as the two battled together to secure 2nd place as both runners finished in front of St. Paul’s #6 runner.
The team finished with 59 points behind 1st place finisher, John Curtis (37 points).
The team will compete in the LHSAA State Meet at 2:45 pm in Natchitoches, LA on November 18th.
