The Brother Martin Crusader Rugby team went 2-1 in the USA Rugby South Tournament held in Gretna over the weekend. The Crusaders opened up with a heart-breaking loss to the Trojan Rugby club, a multi-school team from Georgia, 12-5. Scoring the lone try for Brother Martin was Bruce Cuccia.
In their next match against Walton Country from Georgia, the Crusaders started off quickly scoring off a nice run by sophomore wing, Daniel Cardenez, who off-loaded to senior center, Ben Gambino near the goal for the try. Joe Caravella scored next with Matthew Hood hitting the conversion to make the score 12-0. The Crusaders allowed Walton to score next closing the gap to 12-5. The second half was all Crusaders with tries by captains, Connor Glennon and Joe Caravella and a conversion by Lester Duhe. Joe Caravella’s second try came after a great run by junior hooker, James Shea resulting in the Crusaders winning by a final score of 24-5.
In the Crusaders’ final match of the weekend and season, Brother Martin stormed to a 40-12 victory over the Ga. State Champions, Mill Creek, 40 -12. Junior wing, Bruce Cuccia scored 3 tries with Lester Duhe, Joe Caravella and Will Fernandez all scoring one each. Lester Duhe also hit 5 of 6 conversions.
The Crusaders finish the season with a record of 13-3.
