Crusader Rugby Wins Third Game of the Season

Rugby vs. GermantownOver the weekend, the Brother Martin Crusader rugby team found itself facing another opponent from Memphis, TN in City Park. The Crusaders defeated Germantown 27 -17 for its third win of the season.

The Crusaders started off sluggish, taking the first kick and losing the ensuing ruck after new prop, Josh Orellana ‘18, had rumbled up the field for a good gain. Germantown pounded Brother Martin’s defense and continued to retain possession, having the Crusaders put up a good fight on the field. Germantown scored a try running tightly off the side of a ruck.  The conversion was well-played and Germantown took an early lead 7-0.

Brother Martin responded well, led by captain, Andrew Richardson ’18, who had a hard charging run, offloading at the last moment to Jordan Glahn ’18 for the try.  The conversion failed and the score stood at 7-5.

Senior Jack Tucker was the ‘man of the match’ as noted by Coach Gary Giepert ’80. Tucker picked and went weak finding no one home and scored a beautiful 25 meter try in the left corner. The conversion again failed so the score remained at 10 -7. Tucker scored another try and this time, Josh Merritt ’18 found his range and hit the conversion to score putting Brother Martin ahead at 17 -7.

In the second half, Germantown kicked a penalty for three points. Shortly thereafter,  Germantown was penalized on its 22 meter line. Richardson chose to go for post while Merritt put the kick over for three points to put the score at Brother Martin 20 – Germantown 10.

Merritt made a good run for the final try and kicked his own conversion bumping up the scoreboard to 27 -10.  Crusaders started to feel the effect of some injuries and gave up a late try for a final score of 27 -17.

Congratulations, Crusader rugby, on a tough win over Germantown!
