On a warm St Patrick’s day morning in City Park, Brother Martin took on our league rival: St. Paul’s. St. Paul’s started the game in the Crusader territory through hard-charging runs. After a few minutes, St Paul’s cracked the Crusader defense and scored first. The conversion was good and St. Paul’s took a 7-0 lead.
The Crusaders remained patient and held their composure and finally reached the St. Paul’s Try line. After a series of pick and goes, Senior Gus Heller put Brother Martin on the board. The conversion failed and Brother Martin trailed 7-5. Shortly before halftime, Senior Cade Sheehan plowed through for Brother Martin’s second try. Senior Josh Merritt hit the conversion and Brother Martin led at the half with a score of 12 -7.
Our defense was stellar for the remainder of the match, not allowing St. Paul’s to score again. Senior Jack Tucker led the scoring in the second half with a neat break from the base of a ruck, winding his way through the defense till he found the try line. Brother Martin soared up to 17 – 7. Senior prop, Kyran Matherne, was next with a hard-charging run. Josh Merritt converted the try and placed the Crusaders at 24 – 7. Our last try was scored by senior number 8, and man of the match, Sam Mosrie. The Crusader rugby players played the last few minutes of the game down by 2 men for yellow cards given for technical violations, but our defense stood firm.
The game concluded with a final victorious score of Brother Martin 29 – St. Paul’s 7.
