A record-setting performance last week by Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field standout Wes Gonzales ’09 was highlighted on Wednesday when he was named the Sun Belt Conference men’s field athlete of the week in a release by the league office.
Gonzales earned the award after setting a school-record in the decathlon last week at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas. Gonzales set personal-bests in seven events and scored a school-record 7,033 points to finish as the top Division I competitor in the three-day meet.
The point total for Gonzales is the best in the Sun Belt Conference and the 13th-best in the nation this season.
Individually, Gonzales claimed the 400-meter dash and finished in a first-place tie in both the high jump and pole vault. He set personal-bests in the 100-meters (11.15), 400-meters (49.60), 1,500-meters (4:50.63), 110-meter hurdles (14.97), high jump (6-2), long jump (22-9) and javelin (171-3).
