Over the weekend, the cross country team competed in two different meets to accommodate our large program. The team raced both in City Park at the Mount Carmel Cub Run and in Baton Rouge at the Episcopal Round Table Run.
In City Park, the newest Crusader Harriers got a chance to compete for the first time. Our junior high team, led by top 10 finishes from Leyton Liuzza, James Clark, Brayden Penny, Gabriel Levy, DJ Morris, Eli Levy, won a close race over Jesuit 24-35. Both the junior varsity and varsity squads placed 2nd to Belle Chasse. Belle Chasse scored 23 points to our 43 points in the JV 2-mile race, and they scored 27 points to our 53 points in the varsity race. Notable performances in these races came from top 10 finishes by senior Cody Dick in the JV race and junior Emanuel Ochoa and freshman Landon Sequeira in the varsity race. The overall highlight of the meet was probably the always exciting, sloppy course conditions for our athletes’ experience during hurricane season in New Orleans.
In Baton Rouge, the top varsity runners faced similar course conditions at Highland Park while getting a first look at some quality in-state competition. The team placed second to St. Paul's 76-89. Seniors Hunter Appleton, Michael Champagne, and Cade Litolff placed 1,5, and 7 respectfully to give the team an early low score but having a large gap between our 3rd and 4th runners cost us the victory in the end. Runners showing promise in closing that gap in the weeks to come are sophomores Laden Batson, Gary Sandrock, and Kyle Gleason.
Overall, the Cross Country program had a very good weekend, but there's always room to improve. This Saturday, the program will likely be in split locations again at the Loyola Invitational in City Park and the Christian Brothers Invitational hosted by St. Paul's in Abita Springs. Come out and support your Crusader Harriers across the finish lines!
