Crusader Anglers Cast Out Nets on Fishing Trip

IMG_9822It was an evening of fun and fishing for the Brother Martin High School’s Fishing Club in November. The Crusader Anglers along with Mr. Matt Lambert ’98, Dr. David Jouandot ’03, Mr. Mike Lemmon and Mr. Glen Fallon enjoyed fishing on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain at the home of Donna and Tim Blanchard, parents of Sam Blanchard ’18. Prior to casting their nets, the Crusaders enjoyed a hearty dinner while discussing their passion and strategies for fishing. After dinner, they were eager to head to the docks to bait their lines and cast out their nets for some great fishing.

The evening started with a lesson on fish cleaning, identification, and demonstrations from Mr. Benny Miller. Mr. Miller is the owner of the Louisiana Seafood Exchange in Jefferson and was able to answer questions from these Anglers ranging from baiting lines to various types of fish that come through the exchange. In addition, Louisiana Department of Wild Life and Fisheries enforcement agent Sergeant Michael Garrity was also on hand to speak about boating and fishing safety. Garrity answered questions about his various duties and his role as an enforcement agent for over 18 years. Then it was time for members to disperse to various docks to catch some fish.

IMG_9818There were not many fish to be caught according to member Sam Blanchard, but he mentioned that “it was great night to have the fishing club over and to be a part of a great group. It was a lot of fun, but I wish we could have caught more fish, there’s always next year.” Each fisherman received a ditty bag with a Brother Martin fishing towel, flashlight, and assorted fishing gear.  Prizes were also awarded to fishermen for largest trout and largest catfish as well as some great door prizes from Gus’s Tackle of Slidell.

The Fishing Club at Brother Martin is a new club that gives students an opportunity to experience the unique angling environment that South Louisiana has to offer. Students participate in several fishing rodeos, as well as team fishing trips, that allow students to compare fishing techniques and strategies.
