Brother Martin’s Drew Gardner '21 and Cody Schaffer '19 each finished in the top 50 among 346 boys bowlers from 21 states in the singles portion of the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship at Royal Pin Expo Bowl which concluded Monday in Indianapolis.

Gardner placed 20th and Schaffer 45th in the event, which featured an eliminator-style format after four games of total-pins qualifying.

Gardner qualified in 12th place and vaulted to sixth after the first of six single-game survivor rounds, in which the field was cut in half each time, on Sunday night.

Monday turned out to be a different story as Gardner slipped back to 14th and eventually to 20th, missing the cut to the top 16 by just 13 pins. He had a seven-game average of 223.7.

Schaffer qualified in 45th place and jumped to 30th after the first survivor round, but was eliminated in the second survivor round Monday morning. He averaged 216 for six games.

Gardner is one of two returning starters for the two-time defending state champion Crusaders in 2019-20. The national championship was Schaffer’s final event in a Brother Martin uniform, as he heads to Spring Hill College to compete for the Badgers’ bowling team in the fall.
