Corey Gaconi ’15, a member of the Southeastern Louisiana’s baseball team, was named the state’s pitcher of the week for his performance against Seton Hall at the Cox Diamond Invitational in Pensacola, Florida. After allowing a single to Seton Hall’s lead off batter, the sophomore from New Orleans, retired the next 20 batters he faced. Pinch-hitter Matt Toke snapped the string with a two-out infield single in the seventh. Gaconi (1-0) earned the win, the first of his career, after tossing seven shutout innings. He surrendered just two hits and did not walk a batter. The right-hander fanned six, including four-of-five leading up to Toke’s pinch hit. The Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) honor is the first weekly award for a Lion player this season.
