Our school community and guests filled the Conlin Gym on Wednesday, February 19, to recognize our 2020 UCA National Champion Cheerleaders and LHSAA Division I Wrestling State Champions.
Before Head Cheerleading Coach Jessica Fresina introduced her 2019-2020 cheerleading squad, our crowd was able to watch the UCA national championship performance. Coach Fresina introduced each cheerleader individually and highlighted all the seniors’ contributions to the mat, to the sidelines of games, and to the team. The Brother Martin cheerleading program won the UCA High School National Championship on Saturday, February 8, in Orlando, FL. This is Brother Martin’s Cheerleading program's first national championship title in the school’s history.
After the cheerleaders presented their championship trophy to Principal Ryan Gallagher ‘00, Head Wrestling Coach Andrew Nicola, took to the podium to commemorate the 2019-2020 Brother Martin wrestling season. Coach Nicola began by presenting each of the ‘starters’ who represented Brother Martin in the 2020 LHSAA State Championship in Bossier City, LA. Amongst the 14 wrestlers who took to the mat, Brother Martin had five finalists, three runners-up, and two individual state champions. Seniors Connor Hoffman and Alex Duncan will both leave their legacy at Brother Martin as 2x State Champions. The Brother Martin wrestling program claimed their 20th state title in Bossier City, LA on Saturday, February 15, taking over the mat with 242.0 points over St. Paul's 236.5. The Division I state championship was the 20th overall for Brother Martin, all since 1979, as well as the eighth championship in nine years for the Crusaders.
Congratulations to both the Cheerleading and Wrestling programs for your championship titles! Our school community will continue to celebrate your success and well-deserved honor with your trophies on display on Elysian Fields.
