In May, the 36th General Chapter of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart convened in Rome. This month-long meeting of Brother delegates from all over the world took place at the Generalate and covered several significant topics as the institute set the agenda for the newly-elected general council for the next six years.
Brother Mark Hilton, provincial of the United States province, was elected superior general of the Institute for a six-year term. Brother Mark is the 17th superior general and only the second to be elected from America. His general council includes Brother Raymond Hetu, Brother Denis Plourde, Brother Stéphane-Léon Sané, and Brother Herbert Mangove.
Brother Martin High School President, John Devlin joined two other lay partners in mission as invited presenters and guests at the general chapter for a week of interaction with delegates on the topic of “A shared, life-giving charism.” Mr. Jamie Palacio Forcat, Mr. Luc Baillargeon, and Mr. Devlin made presentations in Spanish, French, and English respectively on their experiences of the charism of the institute’s founder, Father André Coindre. They then participated in a panel discussion with Brother Ivy LeBlanc and Brother Stéphane-Léon Sané, responding to questions from the delegates on sharing the charism with our lay partners in mission throughout the Institute.
Near the conclusion of the chapter, delegates and guests participated in an audience with Pope Francis on the steps of St. Peter and took pictures with the Holy Father.
