Brother Neal’s Chat with Coach Bonis #8: Terrebonne Wrap up, Holy Cross Preview

It’s not often you see two safeties in a football game, but that’s what transpired last Friday on a rainy night in Houma. The 14-9 Crusader non-district victory over Terrebonne included no offensive touchdowns. Jack Landry ’20 kicked two field goals and, after the Tigers ran back an interception to make the score 12-9 with five minutes to play, boomed a punt to the Tigers’ two in the final minutes to set up a safety two plays later.

“Both teams had to deal with the elements,” says Coach Mark Bonis. “The weather made both teams very one-dimensional.” The staff didn’t put any wraps on the offense because of the rain. “We still had our RPO (run-pass option) game called. QB Garrett Mmahat ’22 felt more comfortable handing the ball off. We depended on the run game and special teams to control the game. We won the explosion battle all in the run game and the turnover battle. However, we didn’t capitalize in the red zone.”

“Our defense played really well. A team like Terrebonne with that much skill can go the distance at any time. But we did a good job containing all their weapons.”

The 7-1 Crusaders now prepare for the Homecoming Game against Holy Cross Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Tad Gormley Stadium. “The Tigers are 4-4, but look at the teams they’ve lost to – Rummel, Curtis, St. Thomas More, and Jesuit. Don’t let that record fool you. They’re very dangerous. They have the best receiver in the district in Tyler Kirkwood (#2). They have a really good running back in Jalen Handy (#3), and the quarterback, John Wooton (#14), is outstanding. I watched him live against Rummel. He took a pounding but kept getting up and made some good throws. Their offensive line is humongous.”

“The leader of the defense is LB Tyler Grubbs (#15). He’s a four-year starter who was preseason all-state. They play a three-man front that is really big. It’s going to be Catholic League football at its finest once again.”

The forecast calls for a 0% chance of rain Friday night with temperatures in the 50s!  Come out and join in the Homecoming Festivities on Friday with tailgate starting at 5:00 p.m. and kick-off at 7:00 p.m. You don’t want to miss special performances by the Crusader Band, Cheerleaders, NJROTC and special Homecoming presentations.
