A pair of improving teams fighting for better position in the upcoming Division I state playoffs square off Friday night at Bob Conlin Gymnasium when Brother Martin hosts Archbishop Rummel at 7 p.m.

Former Crusaders head coach Bill Gallagher will join me on the call of the game following the junior varsity contest.

Brother Martin (12-14, 3-3) is coming off of a solid 68-57 victory at John Curtis Christian.

T.J. Small leads the Crusaders, averaging 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while Victor Tomlinson averages 11.1 points and 2.3 assists per contest.

The Raiders (8-18, 2-4) are coming off of consecutive district wins, beating Shaw before shocking St. Augustine 60-54 Tuesday night, ending the Purple Knights’ 16-game win streak.

Junior Corey Smooth led Rummel with 14 points while junior Jaelen Sturgis had 13 as the Raider football players have vastly improved the basketball team most recently.

Brother Martin handled Rummel 53-34 on Jan. 2 in Metairie in the district opener for both teams. The Crusaders won both meetings last season and have won six straight against Rummel.

Former Brother Martin head coach Scott Thompson, who guided the Crusaders to the Class 5A state championship in 2010, returns to Conlin Gymnasium as the head coach of the Raiders.
