Brother Martin 'Serves' a Successful Tennis Tournament

On Friday, May 11, the 12th annual Brother Martin Tennis Tournament, sponsored by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association of New Orleans, welcomed over 170 male and female players to our record-breaking event! This year, players and their partners checked-in at registration and took to the tennis courts at our new location, City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center.  Committee member Gwen Asaro commented that “this year’s tournament was a huge success. We were fortunate enough to have our largest turn out in the ladies division ever.  Between the beautiful weather, new location, great food and music we couldn’t have asked for a better day!”

Upon arrival, committee members Billy Moore ’80, Gwen Asaro, Kerri Becker, and Terry Tarleton greeted participants who received a thank you gift of a Brother Martin insulated tote bag. Then, prior to check-in, Tournament Director Chris Dazet helped players find their way to the courts for their first match.

Players and their partners not only served a “backhand,” but also had a great day of tennis, food, door prizes, raffles, and more all in support of Brother Martin High School. An assortment of lunch items were available consisting of black-eyed pea noodles from Mo Pho – Jeff Gulotta ’93 & Mike Gulotta ’98, pasta salad from Mandina’s, sandwiches from Mike Serio’s Po-Boys & Deli – Mike Serio ’69 CJ, pizza from Tower of Pizza – Missy & Walter Forschler ’77, and more!

DJ Pat Barbaro ’85 was on hand entertaining participants with his large playlist of music to get everyone in a playful mood!  Representatives from Allied Chiropractic & Wellness Center, Dr. Ben Dichiara ’01, also gave five minute massages for participants in between matches. Participants could also enter their name for several door prizes and a 50/50 cash raffle. Over 50 parade of prizes were available to winners; congratulations Britney Theriot for winning the 50/50 cash raffle!

Adding to the excitement of the day, champions were crowned both in a ladies and men divisions and received a special prize designed by Favorites Promotional Products – James Casadaban ’06 & Mary Kay Casadaban. First and second place teams also took time from the fun to pose for a photo. It was a great day for these tennis enthusiasts who now look forward to the 2019 Tennis Tournament!
