We would like to congratulate the Brother Martin Crusader Rugby Team for opening its season with a 31-15 win over Jesuit.
Head Rugby Coach Gary Giepert details the action of this game:
"Captain, Senior scrumhalf Cameron Coughlin started the scoring at 9 minutes in with a try in the corner. Joe David Ward made the tough conversion, giving Brother Martin a 7-0 lead. Five minutes later, Jesuit took advantage of a knock-on in the Brother Martin half and, after some good phase play, scored on a hard-driving run. The conversion was no good, and Brother Martin held a tenuous 7-5 lead.
Jesuit again obtained possession of the ball in Brother Martin’s half and scored another try but the conversion missed with Jesuit 10-7. Jesuit then scored one more time before half. The halftime score was Jesuit 15, Brother Martin 7.
Brother Martin came out with renewed determination in the second half and scored after a hard-charging run by senior flanker Caleb Williams, who offloaded to J.D. Ward at the last minute, and Ward went over for the try. Ward converted his own try and Jesuit held a slim 15-14 lead.
Junior, rugby hooker Austin Dupuis scored next by bulling over the line. Branson Perez converted and Brother Martin held the lead for the first time, 21-15. Next, it was first-year player, senior wing Grant Ruth who scooped up a Jesuit dropped pass and ran in for the score. With the conversion being no good, Brother Martin led 26 over Jesuit's 15.
The final score was by Junior wing, Caden Flanagan, who received a pass on the outside and outran his defender to the try line. The conversion failed, and Brother Martin won 31 to 15."
