Brother Martin High School’s Partners in Mission and guests met for our annual Brother More Schaefer, S.C., Recognition Ceremony on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at the Audubon Tea Room. This year, Michael H. Lynn, Jr. '04 was presented with the Bro. More Schaefer Award for following the model of Brother More Schaefer, S.C. (1932-1983,) in his commitment to Excellence in Instruction, Commitment to Student Formation, and Demonstration of Christian Witness both inside and outside of the classroom.
Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 referred to Lynn as “a true servant leader. Mr. Lynn works alongside each of us in order to ensure that Brother Martin is better today and tomorrow than it was yesterday.”
Mr. Lynn, who holds a bachelors’ degree from the University of New Orleans and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction degree from Louisiana State University Shreveport, emphasized that “For me, Brother Martin is where I learned to teach,” serving such roles as colleague, mentor, friend, English and social studies teacher, Dionysians co-moderator, Assistant Dean of Students, and Dean of Students. Currently, he serves as a co-moderator of the Student Council. He is also the Director of Faculty Formation, forming new teachers and colleagues in the educational charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. “By his actions, he demonstrates that he believes that every one of us is capable of growth academically, emotionally, and spiritually,” said Gallagher.
In addition, Mr. Lynn provides not only personal attention but also friendly discipline to each one of his current students, and "in whatever time and whatever place, he serves,” stated Principal Gallagher. “Michael’s impact on our school is immeasurable.” He was also described as being the “epitome in our school of hope” for his students and a builder of trust with them as well. Mr. Lynn said in his acceptance speech, “I genuinely love Brother Martin High School. I love our students, and I love all of you,” to the 200+ people in attendance.
In closing, as Principal Gallagher remarked, “Michael truly believes in the mission of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. He always has faith in our students.”
In addition to our faculty recipient, Johnny LeBourgeois ‘73 was recognized as this year’s Founders Medal recipient for his passion and commitment through service to our school that embodies the spirit of our original founders. He is a member of the Class of 1973, the first Brother Martin High School four-year class. With spirit and passion for Brother Martin, he is a true ambassador through his volunteerism, coordinating his class reunions, serving multi-terms on the BOHSAA Alumni Board, assisting in raising funds for the future of our mission, and more. He is also known by his classmates and peers to have an “incredible understanding and appreciation for the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart,” and his crimson and gold spirit is with him wherever he goes.
Faculty members who were also recognized include Loralie Condon, Matt Lambert ‘98, Leo Lowder, and Chris Vicknair for twenty years of service, Justin Fleetwood for thirty years of service, and David Falati and Michael Lemmon for forty years of service.
